Full Description
Church of St Peter. Consists of continuous chancel and nave, S aisle, porch, vestry and round W tower. Thatched Norman church, not listed in the Domesday survey of 1086. Norman windows, fragments on N and S side of church, lower walls on tower.
Circa 1300: Chancel lengthened. Circa 1320: Priest's door. C14/C15: Main structure. 1470: Porch.
1846/48: S aisle rebuilt.
1973: Thatched roof renewed (S1). Details in (S2)(S3)(S4).
According to church guide of 1987 the church was listed in Domesday and referred to in a charter in the British Museum. Also contains brief details on church fittings, C15 pulpit etc.
The church could be included in Domesday as one of the three churches in the parish of Leiston which Scarfe proposes as a possible minster site (S5).
