Full Description

A hinged book strap fastener C13-C14 and made from two different alloys was donated to Moyses Hall Museum in 1984 by the finder (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s).
It is 4.85cm long. The strap end has two rivets at one end. The edges are decorated on the upper surface with a line parallel with the sides; the gap being filled with diagonal hatching. The strap would have looped round the hinge-pin. The terminal has a bulbous 'body' pierced from top to bottom. The 'neck' of this body has a hole in its upper surface (perhaps this was the setting for a stone or cloisonne?) and the 'head' is pierced from side to side to represent a mouth.
Found with a metal detector `behind donor's house' (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). Examined, identified and dated by John Cherry of the British Museum (S1). `Behind donor's house' in (S1) suggests (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) approximately, but note Med (Rom & Sax) scatter circa 150m N - LKH 103, includes book mount. Possibly same sites?
