Full Description
A trade token of bronze and dated 1794 was presented to Moyses Hall Museum in 1984 as part of the Harley Collection.
The token is half penny in value. It is 2.8cm in diameter and pierced. On the obverse side the following appears: the ruin of a castle, two round towers and a more modern building between the two. The words "BUNGAY HALFPENNY" also appear on the obverse side as do the words "BIGOD'S CASTLE" which are written in the exergue. On the reverse side the following is depicted: "FOR CHANGE NOT FRAUD (17)94" and the figure of justice with scales and sword. The edge of the coin is plain.
In the book "Commercial Coins 1787-1804" by R C Bell, Corbitt and Hunter Limited, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1963, this token appears as "Suffolk Number 3" (S1).
