Full Description

January 1976: `7925 5203. Probable mill mound..... a ditched mound is situated on sloping ground in a low lying position at the side of a river valley below (NW of) Thurston Hall... It measures 24.0m by 30.0m and is 3.2m high, with an irregular ditch (disturbed by later digging) to the N & W. A causeway leads up to the mound from the SE and a modern drain encroaches on the NE. The flat top measures 6.0m in diameter and inclines to the NW, but shows no sign of a structure. Probably an early windmill mound, though no local tradition survives of a mill here and there is no evidence to suggest the use of water power' (S1). On the tithe of 1841 the field is recorded as `First Stansfield meadow', `pasture' with no evidence for earthworks. An oval mound is shown on the 1886 1:2,500 OS map.
December 1978: Site visited after finds of Rom (& later) coins (see Rom). Under trees; chalky clay soil ?; dimensions as on OS. A large hole on SW side could be an excavation pit (?marl) and the mound formed from resulting spoil. There is not a continuous surrounding ditch but a combination of field boundary ditches. Other pits on OS 6 inch (map) along this valley. Situation unlikely for a barrow or a windmill. Rom coins presumably derive from a adjacent pit area if it is simply a spoil heap (S2).
