Full Description
A bronze half penny from Ipswich, diameter 2.85cm, was presented to Moyses Hall Museum in 1984 as part of the Harley Collection.
On the obverse side of the token the following appears "IPSWICH CROSS" ; 1794 in exergue; a depiction of the Market Cross surmounted by the figure of Justice. The following words appear on the reverse side .
"PAYABLE/AT/CONDER'S/DRAPERY/ WAREHOUSE/IPSWICH (written over six lines). The edge of the token is diagonally milled. In "Commercial Coins 1787-1804" by R C Bell, Corbitt and Hunter Limited, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1963, this token appears as "Suffolk Number 14" (S1).
