Full Description

Site of former Pernal (various spellings) Green. Lane to south still named Purnal Lane. A memoranda of 1698, from court rolls of circa 1407 relating to Nether Hall, Thurston, discusses land at cited location saying how Purnell Close (field) was thrice called Purnell Green which was believed to have been a Common. Purnal names survived in circa 1840 tithe apportionment for three fields, which in conjunction with 1698 map have been used to approximately define Green on HER map. Presumed medieval housing surrounding green.
Apart from the above memoranda a number of other documents refer to a number of ponds at Purnals used for fishing. Many of these survived on the 1958 OS map.
