A water mill is recorded in the Domesday Survey at Assington in 1086. Evidence of site of water mill from 1837 tithe map of Assington, plot 226: Hawkins Mill Field, plot 229: House, mill, yards and gardens, and plot 237a: mill pond (S1)(S2).
