Full Description
1994(?): Nude bronze statue, said to be of Mercury, eight inches high, and in perfect condition. Found metal detecting in Freckenham (by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)). Said to have been sold to dealer in Thetford for 300 pounds and sold on to Europe/USA within three days.
Other finds from same area consisted only of Georgian penny and C20 `rubbish', such as cartridge cases etc (S1).
The cited findspot could either be the area of FRK 007 (partially scheduled castle earthworks), which is partially allotments but mainly meadow, or the area of FRK 015, which is arable. The depth of the find and the `associated' finds suggest meadowland and FRK 007, to be the more likely of the two locations, and suggests Med(?) re-deposition , though note inhumations (see Un) from this area.
