Full Description

Wickham Stew: Large fishpond consisting of a rectangular moated island 112 x 38m (1.06 acres) with a large pond-like extension to the moat at the southern end. The overall dimensions are 230 x 70m. The island is covered by a mixed deciduous wood. There is a shallow cross ditch towards the northern end and a circular pit or pond in the middle of the southern end. Most of the moat is silted up. The southern extension is partly infilled with reeds but still has a large area of open water (S1).

Named as `Stews' and 'Stew Meadow' on the 1841 Tithe map (S2).

Probably a late 15th or 16th century fishpond associated with Giffords Hall (see WCB 002).

From NHRE record:

TL 774 540 Wickham Stew (NAT) (S3)

Wickham Stew (name confirmed) a large constructed fish pond with central island, fed by a stream from the north and drained through a sluice (noe modern) at the southern end. The pond measures overall some 240.0m N-S by 70.0m E-W, and the island 110.0m x 40.0m. Slight evidence of smaller ponds can be treated on the west wide of the island but these have been disturbed by later digging.
