Full Description

Sunken green lane leading to a former triangular area called `Tinkers' Close, which was probably the site of C13-C15 market at Lidgate (S1). The lane now makes a near right-angled turn at its east end to avoid a steep scarp. This scarp may have been produced by chalk quarrying after the road had passed out of major use. Enclosure map of 1817 shows the lane continuing alongside the possible western edge of the outer bailey - see LDG 010.
