Monument record BAW 049 - Site of platforms and enclosures of possible medieval to post medieval date

Please read our .

Summary

An undated enclosure has been recorded at this site on aerial photographs. Also at this location indistinct (and now largely levelled) earthworks of probable medieval to post medieval date platforms and enclosures have been recorded from historic aerial photographs. It is assumed that the aerial photographs show the same features during different stages of survival – although this has not been established for certain. Assessment of the 1m resolution Lidar DTM data suggests that some earthworks could remain, although again it was not certain.

Full Description

March 2016. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The photograph (S1) referred to above was not available during the NMP mapping of this site. However a series of low earthworks and vegetation marks could faintly be detected on earlier aerial photographs (S2-S4). Assessment of the 1m resolution Lidar DTM data suggests that some earthworks could remain, although it was not certain. The site would appear to consist of an area of possible sub-rectangular platforms defined by relatively wide ditches and/or drains, with ditched/enclosed areas to the east. It is unknown how these low, ill-defined earthworks relate to what was visible on (S1). It is assumed that these earthworks are medieval to post medieval in date. It is not clear whether they relate to domestic or stock enclosures. Note nearby medieval finds (BAW 028).
