Full Description

Water mill on River Gipping marked on Hodskinson's 1783 map (S1) and on Kirby's map of 1736 (S3).
Known as Barking Mill (1880s), Coddenham Road Mill (S2?) and now mapped as Bosmere Mill.
In 1965 used as a store (S2).

Former watermill, now a restaurant. Late 18th or early 19th century. 4 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Concrete tiled roof, half-hipped at the north end. A gabled lucum (hoist loft) projects from the east roof slope. 3-window range of 20th centruy pivoting small-pane casements, replacing original sashes. A pair of 20th century multiple-panelled entrance doors. A 2-storey brick and flint extension of 19th/20th century on the west side. A large iron breast- shot waterwheel, formerly in a wheelhouse but now external. All milling machinery has been removed. Formerly known as Barking Road Mill or Quinton's Mill (the former Bosmere Mill stood about 800m down the River Gipping at Riverside Farm, Creeting St. Mary until the 20th century) (S4).

2014: A Historic Asset Assessment was conducted on the former outbuilding situated to the north of the the mill. The building is in poor state of repair and requires restoration. The structure is divided into three bays by large heavily tarred oak posts that predate this structure and probably date from the 17th century. The outer walls are flint with a rubble core and brick corner piers. The northern front post rises well above the height of the present eaves indicating that the low-pitched softwood roof is not the original roof. The layout of the building suggests that it was used as a cart lodge. Several carperenter's marks are visible on the front posts of the building, the type of which are typical of the late 18th century, the time around it is assumed that the mill was built (S5).
