Full Description
St Edmundsbury and Ipswich diocese, Ipswich archdeaconry, Woodbridge deanery. Status : vicarage. Structure : chancel, nave, S porch, embattled SW tower. Date : Perpendicular, chancel rebuilt 1874. The church lies in the NE of the parish (S3).
In April 1983 the SIA visited St Mary's church and saw the major restoration work which took place there between 1873 and 1897. "Plans by R M Phipson, Diocesan Architect, involved demolition of old chancel, rebuilding from foundations ('early Decorated style') with any of old stone serviceable, new from Randell and Saunders' quarry, Corsham Down : altar steps Portland, benches and prayer desk best Memel oak" (precis) (S1).
"The late C14 tower stands to the S of the nave and was probably built by Felbrigg, his arms being over the entrance. The only other things of interest in the church are two Med bells, the beautiful standing cup with date letter for 1619 and the splendid brass to Sir George Felbrigg, 1400, with basinet, camail and arms on jupon" (S2).
