Full Description

Likely location of bridge shown spanning River Yox on 1783 map (S1). Possibly on 1755 map also (S2). Construction date unknown. A bridge still exists at this location.
1996: watching brief on (1950s) bridge demolition & reconstruction noted, before work begun, a planked revetment running across river some 4m to west of bridge, also a few medium sized posts (circa 200/300mm diameter noted in north bank, west of bridge. No evidence for date or any indication that these timber structures might be associated with each other. Also prior to bridge demolition an area circa 60m (N-S) by 50m (E-W) just to east of bridge scraped to form temporary diversion - a few flint flakes were noted and a thin, dessicated, peat layer adjacent to river (see map in S3). No other finds or features. No earlier structures noted during bridge demolition (S3).
