Full Description

Rectangular moat with partly moated `forecourt' or barnyard on E side shown on 1846 Tithe Map - both areas named as `Moat Yards', arable, owned by John Tilbrook Sen and occupied by Thomas Tilbrook (S1).
Modern 1:10000 map shows only the N side surviving as a field boundary.

The cropmark remains of a probable medieval moat to the north-west of the village of Cowlinge at TL 7126 5453. The trapezoidal outline of the moat can be seen set against the current field boundary which forms the NE side of the enclosure. The Cropmarks of a network of ditches, probably associated former drains can be seen linked into the moat and extending to the south-west into the next field. These and other cropmark ditched boundaries as well as the NW edge of the moat outline were visible as hedgelines on the 1st edition OS map dating to the 1840s (S2)
