Monument record STF 008 - Cropmark of an undated ring ditch, possible the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, at Assington Green

Ring ditch cropmark, circa 20m diameter, with wide (entrance?) gap/causeway to NW. Traversed by field boundary(?) ditch (S1).

The ring ditch described above, which perhaps marks the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial cropmarks (S2). The possible remains of an internal mound are visible as a low earthwork on visualised lidar data (S3-S4), but the feature is very faint and poorly defined and its archaeological origin is uncertain. The ring ditch measures approximately 23m in diameter and as described above has a gap on its north-west side; it is not clear whether this is a causeway and part of the original design of the feature, or a result of the cropmark being masked or this part of the feature being destroyed. As the latest lidar survey (S3) was flown relatively recently (2023), it is possible that the earthwork element of the site still survives. As described above, the cropmark of a linear ditch can be seen crossing the site; it is probably a field boundary of medieval to post medieval date and is recorded as part of STF 009.
