Full Description

Cropmark of ovoid enclosure, circa 20m by 15m, with entrance to SE within irregular enclosure, SLY 045 (S1).
A 'D' shaped enclosure, probably of late prehistoric date, is visible as a cropmark centred on TM241343, Shotley parish. The 'D' shaped enclosure has a well defined entrance to the east on it's 'curved' side and is approximately 18m by 13m in size. It is located within a larger area defined by two linear cropmarks, one to the east and on to the west. The western linear is circa 22m long and is centred on TM240343 and the eastern feature is circa 42 long, centred on TM241343. These appear to enclose the 'D' shaped feature although it is not possible to see returning edges to these linears on the northern or southern sides and therefore it is not possible to say for certain whether they do actually surround the 'D' shaped feature. There may also be elements of post built features in and around the enclosure showing as the cropmarks of post-holes. However, this complex of cropmarks appears to be cut into a small island of surface geology that differs to that of the surrounding field, such as a pocket of gravel. This is well-drained resulting in its good cropmark visibility, but the possible post-holes may simply be a side-effect of this underlying geology. The 'D' shaped enclosure may also be enclosed by a less well defined rectangular enclosure on a slightly different orientation to the linear features described above which may pre-date them, but again it is not possible to be certain from the aerial photographs. A linear feature also bisects the enclosure in its north-western edge, but it is unclear whether this pre or post-dates it. This enclosure is probably part of the wider late prehistoric or Roman landscape described in ARW 020. (S1-S4)
