Full Description

Cropmarks of possible toft, boundaries and trackways (S1) on W side of `Sandgrene' as marked on Haiward's map of Sutton in 1629. Includes site of Sandgrenehouse - see SUT 078 for details.
Possible Medieval or Post Medieval plot boundaries, field boundaries and a trackway are visible as cropmarks of ditches, centred on TM 30094542, on an aerial photograph taken in 1996. Linear ditches, probably field enclosure boundaries or plot boundaries are visible running roughly east-west on the same alignment as the modern field boundaries. Three other linear boundaries, such as that centred on TM 30054542, run roughly north-south, creating at three or four rectangular enclosures. A short stretch of trackway is visible curving from TM 30174544 to TM 30104540 and a number of pits which could be archaeological, such as those at centred on TM 30084544, are spread across the northern half of the site. The functions and dates of the pits are unclear. (S1) The trackway appears to be marked on a map of Sutton parish in the early 17th Century and a number of the cropmark boundaries may also correspond to boundaries on this map, suggesting that they could have their origins in the Medieval period. (S2) A brick kiln and house plots are also marked in this field on the later Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 25" map of circa 1884 and therefore a number of the boundaries may also relate to this period. (S3)
