Full Description

From at least the late C16 Woodbridge was a major shipbuilding centre. In 1618 Browning built a ship of over 500 tons for East India Company (probably at Woodbridge as it had deeper water than Ipswich, where he also had a yard). Between 1650 and 1698 seven men of war of between 381 tons and 663 tons (4th and 5th rate vessels) were built. Further information in (S1). Documentary searches needed for history and location of yards.

Formerly recorded as WBG MISC
