Full Description

Several polished and unpolished Neo axes have been found here (Lound) in the course of excavations in connection with the Lowestoft Waterworks. They were met with on the bank of an arm of Fritton Lake, under a peaty deposit resting on what appeared to be an old sandy shore of the lake ((R1) (R2) (R3)). These axes, which were accompanied by a grinding or polishing stone (possibly a hoard, cf PLY 016 & CAC ***), are preserved in the offices of the Gas and Water Company at Lowestoft (S1). Numerous worked flints found in reservoir construction along Lound Run 1897- 1909 (Norfolk-Suffolk border). Material in British Museum, Ipswich Museum and Norwich Castle Museum. Finds most concentrated "in that sector to the N of Bunkers Hill". Includes stone axes S.5 (Group 1), S.53 (Group I), S.65 (Group VI) and S.85 (? nephrite), also S36 (Group XX) which is stated to be from Lound Run yet cites NGR of TG 506 009, 400m N of Lound Run in Belton parish, Norfolk (S3)(R4) and at least six chipped and polished flint axes (S2).
