Full Description

Lowestoft area of archaeological importance, defining area of medieval and early post medieval town core. Based on a map, prepared by D Butcher, of the town in circa 1618 based on a manorial survey (S1).
The early PMed expansion of population was achieved largely through subdivision of existing plots and encroachment onto the market place according to Butcher, so the 1618 extent is likely to reflect the late Med extent. Lowestoft is a Scandinavian place name (S1). Markets were granted to Lowestoft in 1308 and 1445. The Harbour/Dock was built in 1830. Includes area of Med priory of St Bartholomew (LWT 013), PMed porcelain factory (LWT 038) and PMed battery (LWT 039).
Also PMed.
