Full Description
1999: Excavating either side of dormitory 937, in advance of redevelopment, uncovered Roman & Saxon features. Mostly ditches with some pits. The site lies on the east side of Norwich road, immediately north of the cemetery excavation, ERL 104, and the ditches may relate to those found on the north side of the cemetery. The excavation revealed a network of ditches apparently dating to the Rom and Sax periods (both Early Anglo-Saxon and Middle Saxon pottery was recovered) as well as some pits. The topography was undulating with natural sand-filled hollows evident across the site. It is hoped to tie the results of this work with the evidence found in the ERL 104 excavation for the Anglo-Saxon activity beyond the limits fo the cemetery (S1).
Also prehistoric worked flints.
