Full Description
Recorded as Estwude in 1156-80.
'East Wood' named and defined on 1841 tithe map as large irregular area (S1). Much reduced in area by 1880s - see OS mapping. Mostly (northern part especially) used as airfield during first and second world wars (see EWL 026). Southern part is possible survival of the ancient woodland. Condition unknown - needs inspection.
Formerly also recorded as EWL 009.
EWL 012 was formerly recorded in error as a Medieval Green ('The Green').
