Full Description

Sept 2001: Examination of the footing and service trenches for the building revealed nine pits dug into chalk subsoil. Finds were few but datable finds were a fragment of possible Roman tile and a sherd of iron-glazed black ware. It is possible that these pits are the resukt of small scale chalk extraction for domestic use, probably during the 17th-19th centuries (S1).
