Full Description

A group of burials and disarticulated bones discovered during landscaping. Three burials were excavated with the remains of at least seven others represented by disarticulated bones. Two of the burials were aligned north-south and a third probably east-west One of the north-south burials had the head placed beneath the legs. A radiocarbon date obtained from the bones of this individual provided a date of 840+/- 50BP (calibrated to 1040-1290 AD at 95.4% accuracy) showing the burials to be Late Saxon-Medieval. Only one of the group appeared to be a juvenile, and the majority male. The burials lie along the old Brandon to Thetford road and it is possible that this represents a gallow site which could be late Saxon or Medieval (S1).
