Full Description

Large mere shown as 'The Meare' in the C16/17 (S1); 'The Mear' in 1783 (S2); 'The Meer' in 1817 (S3); much reduced as 'The Haven' in 1837 (S4); and as only a small remnant (expanded to the N in 1910) as 'The Meare' in 1976 (OS). Possibly originally a turbary (see ARG Misc, sf16158) (documents not checked) and natural harbour (Thorpe Haven in C16 & The Howe in 1837).
Two Elizabethan charts of Thorpness showing 'The Meare' and 'Almouth haven als Thorpe haven' are figured in (S5)(R1).
Includes area of 2WW anti-glider ditches (see RAF 1953 AP).
