Full Description

Moated site SE of Linstead Hall.
Square unoccupied moat and moated yards with an associated extensive enclosure system are visible on a site partly occupied by Linstead Hall (R1).
1976: This subrectangular moated site consists of a central platform, much overgrown with brambles and small trees, surrounded by a wet moat 5m wide. There was an entrance causeway, now broken down, on SW side (S1). 1981: Site very overgrown. Moat still wet (S1).
1991: Said to be at risk. Owners getting site cleared by contractors - dense undergrowth. Wood, fallen trees - impassable. Foundations of old Manor House would be there. Check contractors do no damage? (S2). 1994: Scheduled (S3).
October 1996 & January 1997: Monitoring of new service drain and sewage plant from Linstead Hall to the NW, outside the moated area, failed to locate any pre C18 features or finds. This confirmed the causeway at this point is original. Details in (S4).

No surveyable remains of Linstead deserted Medieval village are visible in the surrounding area to St Peter's Church (TM 37 NW 3) and most of the old pasture associated with Linstead Hall, Lower Hall Farm, Church Farm and Magna Farm was ploughed circa 10 years ago (a). Where pasture does survive (at TM 322762) amorphous ground disturbance with nettle patches is visible, but no settlement pattern survives. Local tradition states that the village was deserted at the time of the plague
