Full Description

Low bank or causeway, ditched on both sides linking the ‘island’ on which the chapel and abbey remains stand and the dry land. Possibly medieval in date (S1).

January 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks relating to this causeway of probable medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S3). It is not immediately apparent from the aerial photographs whether the ‘bank’ consists of all of the land defined by the two outer ditches/drains, partly due to the presence of modern tracks running along it and the inherent height difference with the drainage channels on the aerial photographs. Within this causeway defined by the drains are two clearly raised strips and these have been mapped as banks, although it is possible that these are actually raised areas on top of a broader lower bank – as defined by the outer drains.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 02nd January 2015.
