Monument record CDD 064 - Old Village Hall, Church Road

2006: A report was prepared as remediation of the archaeological monitoring of the site of the Parish Hall.

The parish Hall was built on the site of the yards connected to Jordan's Farm. The farm takes its name from William Jordaine who owned the property in the early 17th century. 44 acres of this farm's lands including the site of the farmhouse and outbuildings was free from the payment of tithes and the farm is mentioned in the sole surviving manorial rental for the manor of Coddenham Vicarage. This manor was part of the possessions of Royston Priory until the dissolution and the land may have been originally granted to the priory in 1293. There appear to be no deeds or manorial records that could be used to trace the history of this farm back to the early medieval period.
The settlement pattern in the village core of Coddenham is irregular because the lands surrounding the church were under a number of different manors and there was no one overall controlling influence. This does not exclude the possibility that there were houses on the site of the Parish Hall at an earlier date and the possibility to examine the site through archaeological monitoring of the ground works has been lost.
