Full Description

An archaeological excavation was carried out on land to the north of the runway on RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk. An 8m wide strip was excavated prior to the construction of a new perimeter road. This uncovered evidence of pits and ditches of Iron Age and Roman date, forming possible rectilinear field systems and other intermittent activity. The most substantial level of activity appears to have occurred in the 2nd - 3rd century. The finds and environmental evidence, notably pottery, animal bone and environmental samples, suggests an agrarian site that was not located close to the main settlement. Low levels of natural and man-made intrusions had slightly disturbed the archaeological levels (S1).
