Full Description

17th C Timber framed barn associated with grade II listed house. The barn has 5 bays and preserves its original W-facing central porch. The timber frame remains largely in tact with a steeply pitched, 2 tier roof of clasped purlins and staggered butt-purlins that was designed for thatch. The walls contain external trenched braces, but were externally plastered until clad with the current tarred weatherboarding in the 19th C.

The barn is typical of the region and period, reflecting the agricultural boom of the 17th C. Its historic interest lies in the relatively complete frame, which preserves evidence of a narrow rear door opposite the porch, and its unusual wooden grain bins of late 19th or early 20th C.

The various component timbers are fully tenoned and pegged in the medieval tradition. There are no internal notches for wattle and daub.

Lean-to adjoining the S elevation was added in the 19th C and another in the 20th C. A granary floor was inserted into the S half of the building in the 19th C, but with an exception of a small platform in the S-W corner, it has been removed (S1).

Old Newton Hall, Old Newton with Dagworth. 17th century farmstead and farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard U-shaped plan formed by working agricultural buildings with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S2-6).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
