Full Description

A late 16th C timber-framed barn contemporary with farmhouse. It contains 3 bays, with the remains of a fourth, which extended beyond the northern gable but has been almost wholly demolished. The walls are largely in tact and maintains some of the original wattle and daub, however the queen-post roof was replaced in the 19th C. Timber-framed and weather boarded lean-to sheds for horses and possibly cattle were added in the 19th C to the eastern elevation. A similar shed was also added to the west in the 20th C.

The building possesses significant historical interest as it contains evidence of a narrow rear door opposite its principle entrance, which faced the yard to the west, and preserves early external render (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
