Full Description
Brown's Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular courtyard L-plan with the farmhouse detached and set away from the yard. The farmsteads sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. All working buildings have been lost with modern sheds on site.
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
Brown's Farm lies in open countryside at the north-western edge of Holbrook village, approximately 1 km from All Saints church, and is reached by a dedicated track from The Street to the north-east. The site contains a grade II-listed timber-framed and rendered farmhouse of the late-16th or early-17th century with a timber-framed, pantiled and weatherboarded barn in close proximity to the north-west. At the time of the parish tithe survey in 1840 the farm was a medium-scale tenanted holding of 46 acres belonging to the eponymous Joseph Brown and occupied by Edward Brown.
