Full Description
Nuttall Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular full plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. There has been a significant loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use.
16th C grade II listed farmhouse.
The brick outbuilding is a replacement# built c. 1870. it is made up of a range of single storied sheds which originally formed the W side of the now demolished farm yard and probably contained cattle accommodation and a vehicle shed. The original fixtures and fittings have been lost so this is not totally certain. The building does retain some points of interest: an apotropaic symbol of a 'daisy wheel' has been cut into the external brickwork and an interesting pair of low arches, probably designed for calves. The building is, however, not of sufficient age, rarity or architectural merit to warrant listing in its own right.
A contemporary detached stable, vehicle shed and hayloft to the N is of greater significance, given its small proportions and striking appearance. This structure supports the view that, combined with the barn, their construction reflected the status of the cleric who is understood to have occupied the house at the time.
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
