Full Description

An archaeological monitoring was carried out along the coastline immediately east of East Lane, Bawdsey, Suffolk. This recorded a WWII hexagonal Type 22 pillbox. The pillbox was largely undamaged (S1).

Bawdsey Beach, East Lane, Bawdsey. Type 22 hexagonal pillbox. With armoured door in rear elevation (W), armour plate fitted to each embrasure apart from the one adjacent to the door. Cement rendered in order to receive beach pebble for camouflage.

Cited NGR in (S2) inaccurate - revised after 1999 Aerial Photography on HBSMR mapping (4 Sept 2012).

2014: AP shows it has been eroded away.

2005: Photographic and condition survey of a Hexagonal pillbox at East Lane. Located on the beach due to erosion, only partially visible above the shingle at time of visit. Type 22, sides measuring 2.26m, of concrete construction, with evidence of wooden shuttering. Skin coat of cement and pebbledash. Single entrance of western side with metal door frame with no blast door apparent. Single slot to left of door. Single firing slot to each side with metal plate above. No mountings on roof (S3).
