Building record HMG 026 - Barn at Coppings Farm, Hemingstone

Associated with Grade II timber-Framed Farmhouse - 18th C with 19th C alterations.

The 19th C barn to the rear is a multi-function example and survives with most of its original attached sheds. It mainly consists of red-brick and pantile, though the 2 storied stable and granary also incorporate timber walls from a previous 17th C barn. With exception to one recently demolished lean-to shed and minor repairs in concrete block-work, the remaining fabric remains unusually complete. The conversion of its S half into a stable seems to pre-date the 19th C remodelling.
The barn illustrates the extent to which Victorian fashion for unified farm complexes penetrated into even the regions smaller holdings. It also demonstrates the phase of farmyard development which swept Suffolk betwwen 1840 and 1860 in response to agricultural improvement and diversification as instead of the original barn being demolished, it was incorporated into the new. Although of historic interest, the barn is not of sufficient age, rarity or completeness to meet the strict English Heritage criteria for listing (S1,S2).
