Building record MTF 148 - Farm buildings, Malt Office Farm, Metfield

A historical appraisal of farm buildings was undertaken in advance of conversion proposals for the cartshed. The complex comprises a mid-late 18th century threshing barn with 19th century cattle stalls (already converted to residential use), together with a late 19th century brick granary (now also residential). The tower mill dates to the 1839, but by 1889 had fallen into disuse, before being brought back into operation by 1904. By 1916 the mill is reported to have been demolished, and now stands at less than 25% its original height. Two single storey outbuildings were also constructed in the mid and late 19th century respectively. The cartshed first appears on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, and is largely constructed of brick in Flemish Bond, with some flint panelling, and a pan tile roof with traditional straw insulation (S1).
