Full Description

Three visits were made to this site during the stripping of topsoil associated with the construction of a new flight line access road. Much of the road was laid over an existing pond, which was backfilled, but an area of undisturbed ground was exposed to the north of the pond. On the third visit to the site natural chalk was exposed and c.0.2m cut away beneath c0.35m of brown loam. No archaeological features were identified but there were a number of very shallow scrapes apparent in chalk in the section. These may have been of archaeological interest, although they were no more than 0.15m deep, but there were also a number of more recent disturbances in the same area. No finds were recovered from this site.
Although this monitoring did not identify archaeological features the level surface of the chalk and sharp interface between it and the brown loam probably indicates a degree of truncation. It should therefore not be interpreted as clear evidence for the lack of activity in the area. Details in (S1).
