Full Description

18th C timber framed and weather-boarded oak barn. The farmstead is laid out in a loose courtyard plan with the farmhouse detached and set side on to the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use. (S2-5)

This building is a traditional 18th C timber framed and weather-boarded oak barn with a later brick/knapped flint annexe constructed in the 19th C. The original part of the barn is laid out in a grid of four bays, each with a gable end. The extension has a concrete floor but the main part of the barn has an earth floor. The original thatched roof has been entirely replaced with contemporary materials such as corrugated iron and the barn has been repaired and modified throughout the 19th and 20th centuries (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
