Farmstead record HWN 027 - Farmstead: Swans Hall

Swans Hall is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. This farmstead survives intact with additional modern sheds on site. (S1-4)

Farm buildings in the grounds of Swans Hall, a 16th C, Grade I, timber-framed and plastered house, with a tiled roof and mullioned windows. This includes a 16th C timber-framed and weatherboarded barn, with a thatched roof, 7 bays and 3 porches. In addition there are stables and a cowhouse which date from the 19th C. there are also a number of 20th C piggeries. This is a good example of an evolved farmstead, arranged in a u-shape which is unusual for Suffolk (S5).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

[Swan Hall is] A timber framed house built in the 16th century, with exposed timber framing and plaster infill. The east end of the house has brick nogging on the north side and the east side is gabled. At the west end there is a timber framed and plastered cross wing which may be of an earlier date. The east end gable end is double jettied with drop finials. The roof is tiled with a tall 3 shafted red brick chimney stack on a rectangular base.

The Hall dates from the 15th and 16th/17th centuries. Grade 1 (S7-S8)

Swan's Hall (name confirmed) is a close-studded timber-framed farmhouse which has been externally modernised and is not now outstanding visually. (S9)
