Full Description
Park Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular L-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use. (S3-6)
Group of 18th-19th C farm buildings which includes a 18th C timber-framed, brick and plastered barn with 7 bays, extended during the 19th C extension. At the same time brick stables with a tiled roof, a brick open sided shelter shed with a storage area, a brick and weatherboarded cart shed with a granary above and a brick smithy were constructed. This expansion of the farmstead conincides with the Victorian high farming period. The granary was further extended in the mid 19th C to contain an engine house and the cart shed was used to house cattle. This is a good example of an evolved farmstead, however many of the buildings have been altered greatly through. The farm, situated within the registered Henham park, was originally in the grounds of Henham Hall which was destroyed by fire (S1 and S2).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
