Farmstead record SKT 062 - Farmstead: Abbot's Hall

Tithe barn associated with the grange of the Abbot of St. Osyth, now part of Museum of East Anglian Life. This is a 14th C timber-framed and weatherboarded 6 bay aisled barn with a queenpost roof, which was constructed using a number of re-used timbers. It was restored during the 1970's after a large proportion of the barn collapsed during a storm; at this time the roof was mainly reconstructed (S1).

Abbot's Hall, Stowmarket. 14th century farmstead and 18th century farmhouse. Loose courtyard two-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Significant loss (over 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an urban area (S2-7).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
