Full Description
Group of 18th C farm buildings in the grounds of Shelley Dairy, a 16th C timber-framed and plastered farmhouse with a 19th C brick façade. This includes 2 timber-framed and weatherboarded barns on brick plinths, one with 7 bays with a side purlin roof and the other with 5 bays and an area of stabling. Also present are 2 cartlodges of 4 bays; one is brick and weatherboarded and the other is timber-framed and weatherboarded and sits on a brick plinth. In addition one cartlodge has a granary above. Lastly there is a brick and weatherboarded bakehouse. This is one of only a few groups of farm buildings which have been listed as a whole (S1).
Shelley Dairy, Shelley. 18th century farmstead and 16th century farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard multi-yard plan formed by working agricultural buildings, with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is attached to the agricultural range. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S2-7).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
