Full Description
Cordell Hall Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular full plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is attached to the agricultural range. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. There has been a significant loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use. (S4-7)
Cordell Hall is a small 17th C manor house, which consists of a hall with two cross wings. A number of associated outbuildings are shown at the site on early maps. The only surviving building is a 4 bay timber-framed and weatherboarded 18th/19th C structure, which was originally used as a cart lodge and stables with a granary above. Sometime during the 19th C it appears that this building was moved, as is indicated by carpenter's marks, the presence of a number of 19th C modifications and the later addition of a brick plinth. At this time the cartsheds were used to house cattle. Early maps and sales particulars for the site reveal that there was also once three barns, a cartlodge, cowhouses, a piggery and poultry houses (S1, S2, S3).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
