Monument record BED 025 - Land Adjacent to The Old Rectory, Long Green, Bedfield

2011: Bedfield, land adjacent to The Old Rectory, Long Green (BED 025, TM 2180 6668) evaluation trenching of an area of rough pasture on the western side of what had been a moated site until c1850 prior to a proposed residential development revealed two, small, undated pits and a small group of unstratified medieval pottery sherds from a trench in the area fronting onto the road to Monk Soham. The remaining trenches revealed no archaeological features and only one sherd of medieval pottery (S1).

2012: Following an evaluation which recorded two shallow pits of probable medieval date on a c0.25 hectare area adjacent to a now largely filled-in moated site. This small scale area excavation revealed a further 5 similar small, shallow, pits; 4 of which contained small quantities of medieval pottery sherds. Palaeoenvironmental sampling indicates that these pits contained low density concentrations of general domestic waste (S2).
