Full Description

Extensive settlement and field system, east of Valley Farm. Also oval `ring ditch', SUE 012, ring ditches SUE 013-017, enclosure SUE 018. Possibly also further enclosures & ring ditches not showing clearly on oblique APs (S1)(S2). Further field boundaries show on OS APs, extending S to Crag Farm Road.
A number of ring ditches, possible trackways and a square enclosure are visible as the cropmarks over ditched features on aerial photographs, located to the east of Valley Farm in Sudbourne parish centred on circa TM4353. The majority of the linear cropmarks visible on S1 probably do not relate to archaeological features and are most likely to be caused by irregular geological features, such as periglacial ice cracks. The exceptions to this lie to the north of the area where narrow cropmarks show the route of a possible late prehistoric ditched trackway, and the ditched boundary of a square or rectangular enclosure approximately 23 x 22m in size (SUE 070). A square ditched enclosure, SUE 018, is visible to the south of the site, and ring ditches previously recorded as SUE 014-017 can be seen across the site. The feature SUE 013, previously recorded as a ring ditch, does not appear to be archaeological in origin. A number of previously unrecorded probable ring ditches, SUE 066 - 069, can also be seen in this area. It might be possible that more ring ditches can be seen in this area, but the photographs are not clear enough top be certain. Two narrow linear cropmarks running across the site roughly from east to west probably relate to post Medieval field boundaries. They are not marked on the first edition Ordnace survey map of circa 1884 but their orientation roughly matches that of the surrounding field system (S3).
