Monument record SUE 003 - Site of circular post medieval plantation boundary

Please read our .

Summary

A circular post medieval plantation boundary is visible as the cropmark of a widely-spaced double ring ditch on aerial photographs and depicted on historic Ordnance Survey maps. Together with a second circular plantation, SUE 027 111m to the southwest, it formed part of a formal, compartmentalised part of Sudbourne Common, perhaps reflecting the use of the area for shooting in the 19th century.

August 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The circular post medieval plantation boundary described above is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S2)-(S3) and depicted on historic Ordnance Survey maps (S4). Together with a second circular plantation, SUE 027 111m to the southwest, it formed part of a formal, compartmentalised part of Sudbourne Common, perhaps reflecting the use of the area for shooting in the 19th century (S6). There is no evidence of a ring ditch or enclosure pre-dating the enclosure. The possible ‘mound’ shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map lies 96m to the west, and is recorded separately as SUE 122.
