Farmstead record MDN 021 - Farmstead: Rashbrooks Farm

Rushbrook Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular courtyard L-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in a village location. This farmstead survives intact with conversion for residential use. (S3-6)

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

A historic assset assessment was carried out for a group of farm buildings, located within the grounds of a listed 16th C farmhouse, prior to their conversion. The group is located within the curtilage of a listed 17th C farmhouse and includes an 18th C haybarn, an 18th C cartlodge and granary and a 19th C stable. The haybarn is timber-framed structure, originally of 3 bays. A 2 bay extension was added c.1800 and at this time it was converted into a threshing barn. This structure is a rare example of its kind and is highly significant; although much of the original timber frame is complete it requires some repair. The granary cartlodge is a 4 bay timber-framed structure of a brick plinth. It has a good quality timber-frame and is suitabel for listing in its own right. The stable is a timber-framed structure which has more recently been used as a garage, although a number of its original internal features still remain (S1). The granary contains a great deal of graffiti which is belived to have been produced by Italian priosners of war (S2).
