Full Description
Post-medieval activity was represented principally by pits and ditches. The larger pits date to the 19th century and were thought to represent documented quarrying operations. The rubble fill of these features suggest that even at this time site clearance was occurring with the pits providing disposal areas for friary demolition material. In addition, the cuts of the Norris excavations carried out during the 1930’s were also identified.
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 1999 (S2).
Excavation at a medieval friary produced 9.2 kg of iron smithing slags. The recovery of a limited range of slag types and the fragmented nature of these suggest that iron smithing was not carried out in the area excavated. The 6.7 kg of lead waste probably derives from a single period of demolition at the time of the dissolution (S3).
