Full Description

Indicative area of the historic settlement core of Lidgate, defined from historic maps, the locations of listed buildings and artefact scatters (S1, S2, S3).
Domesday Church (S3).
Note: Lidgate had a market in the middle ages (late 13th century Pinchbeck register) but nothing is recorded in the court rolls in the 14th and 15th centuries. There was a high population of villains but a low one of freemen. It appears to have been a failed fledgling town. Cottages were recorded in the castle bailey (Tinkers Close?) and there appears to be some artificial house platforms along with an AP with cropmarks and a small bank in the outer bailey - also see LDG 010 (pers comm, Mark Bailey, Gonville and Gaius).
